Drive-Time

At this time of year it is often dark as I drive both to and from work. The red tail lights chain together in front of me slithering over the hill in the morning. I often listen to public broadcasting as I drive along, but a few times a week I turn off the talk, I don’t turn on music, I just drive along and use the time for reflection. It takes about 20 minutes for me to get to work and if I do this just one way I get at least 10 minutes of real reflection in there.

In a previous post I talked about the value of reflection in creating/discovering meaning in our lives. Sometimes it is useful just to review my core values, placing my awareness on the words (Creativity, Clarity, Compassion), and then consider how I might use the day to highlight these values. At other times I reflect on a friend at work that I value and make a note to stop and see them for a moment or two.

Whatever your core values are, whomever you find valuable in your life, take a little time in the car and turn the radio/CD player/iPod off and reflect on the meaning they bring to you or could bring to you today. Drive-Time can be an untapped resource for you in creating a clear and meaningful life.
